Meet Xander… The Rescued Lab Cat

7 Aug
Xander The Rescued Lab Cat

Xander The Rescued Lab Cat, enjoying his freedom.

We are truly so happy to have “met” Xander’s “mom”, Rachel….but I bet that Xander is even more excited than us though!  Rightfully so.

Starting this Thursday, the CFC Blog will begin featuring guest bloggers who are making changes  and real differences in animal welfare.  We will highlight issues, make introductions to phenomenal organizations and bring you moving stories. Check it out. blog.crueltyfreeconsumer.com.

(Mondays posts will remain about CFC’s  brand and partners etc.)

Here is to our first Guest “Issue” Blogger…. Xander’s “mom” Rachel.

I will begin this post with a shamefully honest admission that I think many people will relate to—I used to think of “animal testing” as a problem that I didn’t need to worry about.
I truly don’t know why I chose to think of it that way, because I have always loved animals and cared about their rights, and I have been a vegetarian for nine years for ethical reasons (now transitioning to veganism). I think that I chose ignorance in regards to laboratory animals because it was easier. When I look back now, I wish that I could educate my younger self about the true face of animal testing—mice, rats, guinea pigs, monkeys, chimpanzees, dogs, and cats, all of them lovable, loving animals that deserve freedom just as much as their non-lab counterparts and would have it if it was not for the companies that choose to follow archaic methods and continue to experiment upon them even when they are not legally required to do so.
There are two types of animal testing: medical and consumer. Medical research is an entirely separate debate, and there is much less that we as consumers can do to change that (though advocacy is always needed, and you can find out more information at http://www.mspca.org/programs/animal-protection-legislation/animal-welfare/lab-animal-welfare/overview.html). What I truly believe we can impact and change, and what I am choosing to focus my advocacy on, is the cosmetics/household product testing that is NOT legally mandated.
I have a personal and particularly important reason to raise awareness about this issue—a black, furry, and very handsome reason.

10269060_1447123768861557_5746945147312546737_o

His name is Xander, and he is a former laboratory research cat who was rescued in January 2014 by Beagle Freedom Project (BFP), an amazing non-profit organization whose mission is to save animals from labs when they are ‘done’ with experimentation. Normally the labs would euthanize these beautiful animals, even though they, more than most, deserve the chance at a happy, loving, free life after being experimented on for years. BFP has had a lot of media attention lately due to recent beagle rescues, and it so wonderful, because every person reached by those stories is one more who can, and will, make a difference.

1925009_1447125798861354_7917440264352997174_nXander is a survivor in the truest sense of the word. He has the kindest, gentlest spirit, and despite three years living in a tiny cage with human contact limited to experimentation that he was unable to refuse, he LOVES people. He was rescued by BFP in January 2014, went to a foster home, and came to his forever home with me and the rest of his cat family—two brothers and one mom—on March 2, 2014. It was fate that brought us together, as I just happened to click on a link to BFP on a vegetarian recipe site, and the most recent rescue was five cats, unusual not just for BFP (which usually rescues beagles, hence the name) but for the world of animal testing in general, because cats are almost always euthanized after experimentation. I fell in love with him as soon as I saw his big eyes and beautiful black fur, and even though BFP is based on the other side of the country from me, as fate would have it, Xander was in a foster home just two hours away. We all agree that it was meant to be!

Xander has an amazing life now. I have many stories to share with you about his adjustment to the free world, and I hope to do so in the coming weeks. For now, he would love it if you would visit his Facebook page—Xander the Rescued Lab Cat at http://www.facebook.com/xanderthelabcat. “He” writes the page, and he always has adorable pictures, videos, and antics to share. His followers say that he brightens their days, and he is so happy to do so! He has also taught many people about animal-tested versus cruelty-free brands, and we just started a weekly post called Sunday Swap where we list cruelty-free alternatives in a specific category. I am hoping that this will help people to realize that going cruelty-free does not have to be frustrating or complicated—it can be as simple as walking one aisle over in the store—and every single person who picks a cruelty-free item over an animal-tested one is truly making a difference.
There are over 20,000 cats in labs in the United States today. Xander is one of the VERY few, and very lucky, to be saved, and he has already touched so many hearts with his story. I named him Xander because it means “defender of all,” and he is doing his best to be the voice for his fellow lab animals. Well, really, he is doing his best to be a normal, happy, adorable, loving house cat, which is all that he should ever have to worry abut again, and it is up to me to share his story.
Thank you for reading it.

“everyone” has a story … including Scot and his buddy Barney of EO Products

29 Jul

Barney EO 1 We’re back from vacation and back to guest blogs and weekly giveaways and announcing a few winners from the last couple of weeks so… for our first order of business…. Scot Mills of EO Products and the everyone Brand makes his contribution as our CFC weekly guest blogger!  Go Scot….

“Why Cruelty Free EO?
I have to say that while I love the fact that EO products are clean, luxurious and effective, it is as much due to my best friend Barney that I am as enthusiastic about this company as I am.
Let me explain: Barney is a 10lb Toy Fox Terrier. He came from the Marin County CA SPCA, where my wife and I found him amongst a horde of Chihuahuas, which the Humane Society folks had mistaken him for. He looked very out of place amongst their yapping enthusiasm, and his demeanor was one of “I’ll come to the front of the cage if I really have to, but as tired as I am of these roommates and their non-stop yapping, I still don’t want to be led on either!” We really felt that he needed a better place to live.
Long story short, we ended up adopting him, and there is no possible way for either my wife or I to regret it – Barney is the best!
However, when he was turned into the SPCA close to a year earlier, Barney had been found in Novato, Ca, with his little knees so badly out of alignment that he had to drag his hind-quarters around, and he had little or no use of his legs due to his genetic deformity. He had also been abused, and it appeared that he had been born into an environment in which he was not well liked or cared for, and he had been abandoned to wander the streets. Kids had been mean to him (we can tell by his reaction to most kids), and he was very skittish and submissive after all he’d been through.
The SPCA was good enough to pay for the surgery to fix his knees, and he spent about 6 months rehabilitating in San Quentin Prison with their Prisoner Care program; and by the time we found him and brought him to his new home, he was a bit wobbly, but up and around, and beginning to find his confidence as well.
Now here’s the thing which I can’t figure out: Barney is the sweetest, most loving and affectionate little best friend anyone could ever want. He looks at you with those soulful brown eyes, and his little tail wags hello, and it is impossible not to want to scratch his head and tell him how happy he makes you.
Did I mention he says “Orp!” when he yawns?
So how in the world could anyone have been mean to him? How could that have been possible?
Unfortunately, there are those in this world who do not understand that our four-legged friends deserve a pain-free existence; including some manufactures of health and beauty aids, who feel that torturing a defenseless bunny is a fantastic way to find out if a product is safe for humans!
This is but one of the many reasons that EO is a favorite in the industry: A Cruelty Free, Gluten Free, Non GMO Zero-Waste B Corporation, which makes some of the most luxurious, effective, all natural and botanical products available. We use only the finest essential oil blends and food-based elements to generate aromas – NEVER any laboratory generated, overpowering and lingering fragrances; only real, clean plant-based elements – and all manufactured right here in the Marin County – never outsourced/never tested on animals – good for you, good for our furry friends, good for our environment….enjoy!”

Scot, what an amazing story in so many different ways!  Thank you for sharing with us and reminding us how good people can be!

Interview with Product of the Year Winner! (Guest Blog)

16 Jul
productofyear

Le Savonnier Marseillais

Happy July 21st!

We’ve been honored with yet another guest blogger.  This time from our friends at the Vintage Soap Factory!  Co-Founder Elizabeth Attie took a few minutes to do an interview with us!  (We’ve tried this product and love it by the way!)

What would you like readers to know about your company and the Le Savonnier Marseillais brand?

The Vintage Soap Factory is a manufacturer of traditional soaps dedicated to always producing 100% natural pure olive oil soaps. We have perfected an ancient process for modern times.
The idea was born with one simple goal — to provide the finest quality natural soap for household and personal use, the latter for all skin types after being aware of the importance of true natural products. We use only superior olive oil sourced from the finest of regions.

Your Le Savonnier Marseillais All-Purpose Soap was honored with a People’s Choice Award as being among the breakout products of 2014. Tell us a little about the product. What has winning the award meant?

It was very exciting for us to be voted Product of the Year in the liquid soap category and featured in Parade magazine. The liquid soap is the finest product line we have to offer, and is everything you need to clean all your washable surfaces. There is no need for an arsenal of cleaners when one all-purpose soap can clean your countertops, dishes, windows, floors, laundry, upholstery and more. Its main ingredients — 100% olive oil for streak-free cleaning and other essential oils, which have antifungal and disinfectant properties — are selected for their
reputed benefits for home and skin. It’s a potent yet gentle formula that is safe for you and your family and also protects the health of our rivers, streams and oceans.

Do natural products really clean?
There is a common misconception that green doesn’t clean. Any one cleaning product — green or conventional and used in small amounts and with proper ventilation — probably won’t make you ill. The problem is that most people use multiple cleaning products. Repeated exposure to the chemicals in these products can add up. On the surface, they appear to be great at what they are designed to do — repelling dirt, dust and grime with nothing more than a spritz and some elbow grease. Unfortunately, these often contain toxins that shouldn’t come into contact with the most absorbent tissue in our bodies. Many of these ingredients are the same compounds you are working to eliminate from your furniture, beauty routine and laundry processes. If they don’t have a place in your living room, medicine cabinet or closet, they shouldn’t be in your cleaning supplies.

Who are your key customers? Why do they buy your products?

The move toward natural, organic and healthy products is not a fad but a societal shift that is poised to grow to $226 billion by 2018, with an annual growth rate of 8.6%. This translates into key trends identified for the coming year, which include:

•The health and wellness consumer: The healthy movement is spreading across all demographic groups, differentiated by lifestyles, behaviors, attitudes and beliefs about health and wellness. Consumers are looking for natural ingredients at a price point that is attractive.

•Convenience and accessibility: There is a demand for products that permit people to make eco-friendly decisions and conveniently carry them out.

•Labeling transparency: Consumers are asking for transparency with regard to product labels, claims and certifications, including Leaping Bunny, non-GMO and organic.

•Our core demographic: A female between the age of 25 and 50 concerned with her family’s health, who cares about indoor and outdoor environments and values natural ingredients in products even when they are not the least expensive alternative.

Thank you so much Elizabeth!  We are so thrilled to have  you and your brand represented at Cruelty Free Consumer.com!

Congrats to you as well on your “Product of the Year” win!

We now carry this on our site!  We love it… did we already mention that!?

A Girl’s Gotta Spa! “Our Story”.

23 Jun
The newest brand to be offered at Cruelty Free Consumer.com

The newest brand to be offered at Cruelty Free Consumer.com

Hello today!  Welcome to our Monday Guest Blog/Giveaway once again!  This is our 3rd official “Installment”…(We need a better word… writers block)… please throw us a suggestion!

This week our focus is on a newly discovered company and I’m in love!  The products offered by “A Girl’s Gotta Spa!”are absolutely amazing just as Shannon had told us!  We love her story and being a mom myself…. I can certainly relate!

Below is Shannon’s story from A Girl’s Gotta Spa!…

The concept of A Girl’s Gotta Spa! began 9 years ago this October.
I was 31 years old at the time and a mother of 3 sons (with another to be the apple of my eye in the not so distant future.) I had recently left working in the mental health field, which was both rewarding and taxing, and moved from the suburbs of Philadelphia to the rural surroundings of the Pocono Mountains. The idea of taking time for myself was not a foreign concept; however it is typically quite a dichotomy. On the one hand you have people telling you that you need some me time, “Take some time for yourself,” they’d say, “You deserve it.” Then, on the other hand, you have people asking you and accusing you of being selfish for doing so.

I believe you deserve to be pampered.

A Girl’s Gotta Spa! ® was built on the belief that your personal well-being should be a priority. A Girl’s Gotta Spa! is a call to action, whether you are young or old, regardless of ethnicity or creed, working in the corporate world or busy raising the next generation of responsible leaders, you deserve to treat yourself daily.
I truly believe this and whether you are worn and withered from your career, your children, your spouse, your friendships, your finances and any other circumstance in your life (the good and the bad), I want you to believe it too.

Pamper: To indulge with every intention, comfort and kindness.

A Girl’s Gotta Spa! bath and body line is one that is natural and cruelty free. Nowhere in our mission is there room for animal cruelty of any kind. We’re proud to now be among a prestigious list of beauty companies who also hold this same value with our Leaping Bunny certification.

  • A Girl’s Gotta Spa! is free of sulfates, formaldehyde, petrochemicals, synthetic colors and fragrances. Our Energizing Citrus Body Wash and Energizing Citrus Body Lotion are both vegan. Crafted in small batches, the purity and quality of the ingredients will be an elucidation to your dry skin care woes and satiate your senses.
  • Energizing Citrus is an invigorating mix of pink grapefruit, lemon, lime and orange. The fragrance is not overwhelming, but more subtle in the sense that you can clearly distinguish each essential oil as you apply the products. The Body Wash will leave your skin hydrated and silky smooth, while the Body Lotion will leave skin looking and feeling soft and healthy.

So I encourage you, take time for yourself today. Know that you are worth it. Know that you deserve to be pampered.

Thank you Shannon, we are so thrilled to be associated with you and your brand!

Next week, you will have the chance to win these 2 products to pamper yourself!  Be watching via Facebook, Twitter and this blog for details as to how to enter!

6 SUN SAVVY TIPS FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN

9 Jun

Time to enjoy summer.... Compliments of CFC'S Featured Company, Andalou Naturals

Time to enjoy summer…. Compliments of CFC’S Featured Company, Andalou Naturals

It’s summertime and with it comes a million ways to be outdoors… yea!  Our good friend Stacey Kelly-Egide, founder & CEO of Andalou Naturals Fruit Stem Cell Science has provided 6 fantastic tips to keep and maintain beautiful skin during the summer months (all year, actually!)

Tip #1 – Love the Shade
It’s important to limit direct sun exposure, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM, when the sun’s rays are strongest. Even on an overcast day, up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV rays can penetrate through cloud cover. For best protection and comfort it’s best to stay in the shade.

Tip #2 – Undercover Agent
Wear clothes that protect your body. If you plan on being outside on a sunny day, cover as much of your body as possible. Wear a hat. Consider using an umbrella for instant shade. And don’t forget to protect your eyes with quality sunglasses that offer maximum UV protection.

Tip #3 – Serious about Sunscreen
Use a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher every day. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) estimates the time a sunscreen can protect the skin from sunburn. To protect your skin from damage caused by UVA and UVB sunlight, a ‘Broad Spectrum’ sunscreen is required. Dermatologists most often recommend a daily SPF 30 that includes UVA & UVB protection ingredients, like Zinc Oxide, to best guard against skin damage caused by sun exposure.

Tip #4 – Defend the Skin You’re In
Sun exposure is the primary cause of premature aging caused by weakened and damaged cells, described as free radicals. To help defend your skin against damaging free-radical cells and the signs of premature aging, including fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation, we recommend an antioxidant-rich sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.

Tip #5 – Renew, Repair, Regenerate!
Antioxidants are nature’s secret weapon against premature aging caused by sun damage. Antioxidants effectively neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons to mend and stabilize the weakened, damaged cells. These stable antioxidant nutrients act as scavengers, helping to prevent and reverse cellular tissue damage.
Tip #6 – Skin Saving Ingredients
Fruit Stem Cells: Increase the longevity of skin’s own stem cells, defending against key aging factors, including UV, oxidative, and environmental stress, while regenerating at the cellular level to counteract the visible signs of aging.

Superfruit Anti-oxidants: Help neutralize free radicals, support cell turnover, increase collagen and elastin, and strengthen dermal immunity. Look for skin care super heroes including: Açai Berry, Aronia Berry, Bearberry, Bilberry, Black Elderberry, Goji Berry, Rosehips, and Sea Buckthorn Berry

Certified Organic Aloe Vera: Rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and proteins, Aloe vera soothes inflammation, oxygenates and hydrates, while advancing the dermal delivery and absorption of essential nutrients.

‘Oppose the Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Act’

23 Feb

This post is important.  I am posting this now because I want to make sure that if you didn’t catch it before… you see it now.  You need to be aware of this NOW.

If you love and care about the welfare of animals… you must read this and take action!

I have taken, well, borrowed, the below emails from 2 very strong and passionate women whom I respect.

Jen Mathews, of My Beauty Bunny….

“I don’t do these types of emails often. This is really important to me, or I wouldn’t bother you with it. Animal testing may soon be required in the US if the Safe Cosmetics Act passes. We have to stop it. Pls sign and share! It literally takes two seconds. Thank you!

I just signed the petition “Congress: Stop the potential for the U.S. to require animal testing that would occur if the Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Act of 2013 (SCPCPA) is passed.” and wanted to see if you could help by adding your name.

Our goal is to reach 1,500 signatures and we need more support. You can read more and sign the petition here:

Intro to Leaping Bunny. Why YOU need to know them: recognize their logo. PART 1.

11 Feb
Cruelty Free Consumer makes shopping for LB certified cruelty free products easy

Cruelty Free Consumer makes shopping for Leaping Bunny certified cruelty free products easy

Think that scrumptious smelling shampoo you’re using is cruelty-free? Maybe it is. Or maybe some unfortunate rabbit had to sit in a restraint for hours while a substance was dripped in its eye to see what happens. It’s actually pretty hard for conscientious consumers to make heads or tails of all the ‘no animal testing’ labels on products (i.e. is it just the final product or its ingredients too?), especially since there are no federal guidelines in place to assess the validity of these claims.

That’s where Leaping Bunny comes in.  This cruelty-free certification program provides the best assurance that a product is free from any new animal testing. What does that mean exactly? Well, in reality, most substances (even water!) have been tested on animals in the past, so the Leaping Bunny Program requires companies and all of their ingredient suppliers to sign statements of assurance promising that no new animal testing is conducted or commissioned on any ingredients, formulations, or finished products. Leaping Bunny goes one step further and also requires companies to be open to independent audits to make sure they are in compliance with their strict rules.

So who makes up this Leaping Bunny Program? Well, Leaping Bunny a.k.a. the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC) is actually comprised of eight animal protection organizations including the Humane Society of the United States, the Doris Day Animal League, and the American Anti-Vivisection Society. When confusion about cruelty-free labeling became rampant in the 1990’s, the CCIC formed and worked together to develop their Standard. CCIC partnered with the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments to develop an internationally recognized Leaping Bunny Logo to represent companies meeting this high standard.

To date, the program has certified more than 500 personal care and household products companies including The Body Shop, Burt’s Bees, Seventh Generation, Method, Molton Brown, and Mrs. Meyers. They publish and distribute their Compassionate Shopping Guide, available both as a wallet-size insert and a free iPhone/Android app that lists all of their cruelty-free companies. Plus, they regularly work with these companies to offer their supporters great discounts and freebies on their Facebook  and Twitter  pages.

Until cruelty-free labeling guidelines exist, the Leaping Bunny Program provides the best assurance that the aforementioned shampoo truly is cruelty-free. So next time you’re in search of personal care or household products that are free of animal testing, look for the Leaping Bunny!

Guest post by Kim Paschen, Communications Manager of the Leaping Bunny Program, which has been connecting compassionate consumers with cruelty-free companies since 1996.

The Goodbye.

Louie "Long Arms"

Louie “Long Arms”

Friday was a regular day except my husband was home and we had a babysitter… So we went out to run errands….we came home and he came up to me and said you should see the cat…He’s acting funny. Louie is my 14 year old tuxedo kitty and so yes, at about 4:30pm, I saw it too and he was having what I guess was a seizure. It had never happened before.
I have thought about what would happen and what I would do when my pets got old or sick…what decision would I make?   I have also thought it would not be fair to keep them alive if they were in pain… But I am not them…so how do I know if they are in pain or not??
My Louie, aka, “Louie love bug”,”Louie long arms” and “Lou-Lou” passed on Friday night.  He had seizure after seizure between 4:30pm and 6pm. I made my mind up that after the first one, I would let him rest and re-evaluate in the morning but when I checked on him in his favorite spot…. I knew it was his time.

I am so sad because he was my buddy for over 14 years. That is a lot of time for creating memories.

Over the last few months, he sat with me at night and also jumped up in to bed with me.  Silly to some, but I love that cat and I am missing his presence, there is a definite void in the house. The crazier thing…. Or not…. Is how Teddy and Bernie, (our dogs) especially Bernie, is reacting. Bernie knows his buddy is not here and that is so sad to me too. Bernie is just moping around. Do animals have feelings? You bet and this is just another example of just how much they do feel.
I keep thinking I’m going to see him at the top of my stairs.  I keep forgetting that I don’t need to go downstairs at night to clean litter and check his food and water.
I knew the time would come, I just didn’t expect it on Friday and I didn’t think it would happen so incredibly fast.  In fact, I bought food for him just the day before. I do believe he didn’t suffer…. And for that I am glad for him…. but sad for me, my family and my other pets who all miss him. Louie was spunky and quirky and had such soulful eyes… he looked like he was so young still, his fur was beautiful and soft. He had a good life. I just can’t believe how fast he went. I miss him but as my daughters said good bye to him as I left for the vet with him wrapped in my favorite sweatshirt, “Lilly” said, “mommy, don’t be sad, God will take good care of him just like he takes care of the other kitties”. Oh, the words and thoughts of a 4 year old. Again.
And as for the  2 year old…. her contribution every time we see a black and white kitty…”ohh, Louie, sad”, followed by her sad face.

The loss of a pet is such a sad time… it has been 3 weeks and I still think I see him in the house.

We love you Louie and we miss you!  Thank you for the wonderful memories!

We have decided that we will make a contribution in Louie’s name to the ASPCA.  It is our hope that it will help other animals live betters lives.

I’m curious to learn if you have made a decision to make a contribution to an organization in your pets name, and  if so, who.  Or if you have done something else in the memory of your beloved pet.

"Look Mom! I made it for you! It's pink!"

“Look Mom! I made it for you! It’s pink!”

All I can say is…I’m glad that cruelty free products aren’t expensive… or don’t have to be…..

My four year old daughter reminded me of that just over the weekend.  Yep…My darling mixed all of my scrubs in the shower.

This real life story happened early Sunday morning and made me happy for that!  She said “Look mom!  It’s pink!”  As I see her little hand coming out of the shower holding something…. “I made it for you… It’s your favorite color!”

Whew…. Never expected that first thing in the morning!

I thought oh no…. She couldn’t have…. No, please, don’t tell me….yep… She mixed my products!  My lovebug was so excited to show me her creation ….I just had to smile and laugh to myself.  I want her to be kind and thoughtful… and in her mind, was she ever!… She was so proud of herself and talked about it all day!

She had concocted a mixture of , Giovanni Mint Lemonade Cooling Salt Scrub, Body Shops Mango Scrub, Bulldog Shave Cream, and several others!
Wow! I’m just glad not all of my stuff was in there!

But, as I have been thinking about blogging and things to write about….. I have to give a lot of credit to a very imaginative, very fun and very energetic girl, my daughter, who has given me great and real “material!”

Thanks for the inspiration, “Maggie”!

So, the point after all of this…. Cruelty free products do not have to be expensive! There is a misconception that being a Cruelty Free Consumer and only using products that have not been tested on animals means spending extra money.  THAT IS NOT THE CASE.
Cruelty Free Consumer sells over 30 brands and there are over 500+ brands certified by Leaping Bunny…. Thousands of choices exist from inexpensive to higher end. It’s up to you what products work best.

Just like wine… You can get a great find at a great price!

Thanks to my daughter, too, for her contribution with yet another story!   Now  I know, that in addition to being a cruelty free consumer….. I might be…. well, I am…A cruelty free mama too!

What products do you love at various price points and, of course,… Why? Let us know!

Don’t forget  that now through November 2nd, log on to our Facebook page (Cruelty Free Consumer) for a chance to win Living Clays’ Starter Kit! ($40 value!)

Enjoy the day!
